Mean Green Juice Recipe

Verão! Verão! I have been saying the same words over and over to my husband lately!  He gives me a gentle look and a warm smile every time.

Of course he knows me too well, to know that I am terribly missing Brazil this time a year. Summer has  begun there and winter is in full force here.

The white sands of the Atlantic Ocean, the sound of the waves  that rocks you to sleep in a breezy afternoon, and the salty air that refreshes your senses. Oh! Only if I could be transported…

My first post for 2012 had to be refreshing, bright, and full of energy. After the holidays, I am back with my juicing routine! To be honest, restarting good habits seems to always be difficult in the beginning, but very rewarding later.

This drink is far from making you mean! Mean Green is a  refreshing drink that can be made any time and any season. For the warmer days, this drink will bring you energy throughout the day. For the colder weather, this drink will help you to boost your immune system and fight all that nasty sickness that seems to come every winter.   All you need is a juicer and some fresh ingredients to enjoy this green juice in a cup.

Mean Green Original Recipe

From Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead

  • 6 kale leaves
  • 1 cucumber
  • 4 celery stalks
  • 2 green apples
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 piece of ginger
1. Have your juicer ready, and your fruits and vegetables washed.

2. Juice the lemon, ginger, kale, apples, celery and cucumber. Pour it in a cup and drink everything!

The ginger and lemon add the perfect touch to turn a few ingredients into a marvelous drink!

I will not be transported to Brazil in instance, but I have to say… this winter, juicing will give me a little bit of verão or “summer” in a cup!

Oh, I have never been to Brazil, but I really really want to go there right now. Should we hop on a plane right now? :-) This drink definitely looks refreshing and also makes me want to go buy a juicer…and then go sit on the beach somewhere and drink it.

I think I’m going to try this recipe in my Vitamix. Not quite the same as juicing, but I think it will still be delicious! Great book too! And beautiful pictures.

Kristie, I think this combination is great on the Vitamix plus you get to have all that yummy fiber in it:)

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out well as a blended drink with the Vitamix. The cucumber peel overpowered the whole drink. I think the ratios for juicing and blending are very different. I’ll enjoy it next time I’m out your way???

Evelyne! I wasn’t a big juicer either until my husband and I watch a documentary on it. Our entire family loves to juice, and specially our boys!

This is so inspiring. I did try this – but omitted the apples as I’m not good with fructose. Kale is a great thing to juice, I added in a little lemon and grapefruit and it was delicious.

    I love those pictures!

I tried this juice twice and I really liked it. Are you starting a green juice fast or is it just sth extra in your menu?

Hi John! I have been juicing for a while but never consistent.

So, my husband and I decided to do the juice fast. Today is our day one for the Standard Reboot Program. They call it 5-5-5. Five days of eating and juicing vegetables and fruits, five days of only juicing vegetables and fruits and back to five days of eating and juicing both.

After that we will introduce back grains, nuts and other good stuff. Thanks for stopping by and comeback anytime!

The food is good, and they give you a lot of varieties.

In my opinion, it takes a lot of preparation and discipline. My grocery list for the week was long:) I am in the kitchen a lot, washing and cutting vegetables and fruits. But I love this stuff!

I will be posting some of my favorite recipes in here when I have more time!

        Thanks John.

Hi, I have never cared for celery and I tried the recipe. The celery flavor overpowers the drink. What can I add or do to mellow out the celery flavor so that it’s not so strong? Thanks

  18. Ana Helena Campbell
    February 23, 2012 |

    Hi Naomi!

I don’t enjoy the celery taste either. The best thing to do in my option is to use a little more ginger and lime. Maybe just lime in the beginning and see how it tastes. If you still taste the strong taste of celery add more ginger. If nothing changes for you, try to cut the celery amount in half and add more of the other vegetable like kale or 1/4 a cucumber.

Also, picking fresh ingredients really helps. I know winter time is hard to find good quality veggies sometimes, but summer is coming soon:)

I hope that it works for you this time!

This looks great! I just watched the documentary and want to give it a try… What juicers would you recommend?

  20. Ana Helena Campbell
    May 24, 2012 |

    Matt,

I bought my juicer at Costco, they only sell one brand here: Jack Lalane, it did pretty well. We used the juicer all the time. The documentary recommends a Breville Brand, I heard very good things about that brand.

After I finish the program, I went to Costco again:) and bought a Vitamix. The program was amazing, my husband and I felt great, but one thing we missed was the pulp. Now, with a Vitamix, we make our green juice everyday and it is smooth and delicious too. I will post the recipe this summer!
